Sonic Experience



On Tuesday 28th, a group of us from the RCA and the RCM held a performance at the RCA showcasing some of our latest sound pieces. 

I put together some posters and flyers for the event, and me and Lara Poe performed two sound pieces with a new version of my Doppler machine.

In the first performance, we created a soundscape by using feedback, holding a microphone up to the speakers in the Doppler machine. Clarinetist Piotr Dec joined us for the second performance, using a score and Max MSP patcher prepared by Lara, creating a "call and response" effect between the two. 








IRCAM Presentations

The IRCAM 2017 forum workshops were held at the IRCAM Centre in Paris between March 15th - March 17th, and included lots of interesting talks (including one on their fascinating new software The Snail) and hands-on workshops.

I've been further developing the Sonifying Noise Pollution project I've been working on for the last couple of months, together with RCM composer Lara Poe, and we presented our work along with some other projects from RCA and RCM students in Studio 5 during Thursday and Friday afternoon.

The public were able to navigate our sonified map using either a mouse or the Leap Motion controller, and discover which UK cities suffer from the highest amounts of noise pollution from road traffic sources, with each city having a unique soundscape created by Lara based on a series of field recordings.




RCA Green Week 2017

I exhibited mine and Yilan Lu's piece "The Plastic Island" once again for RCA Green Week – A one-week exhibition highlighting issues around pollution and climate change.

RCA Work In Progress Show

For the RCA Work In Progress show, I exhibited a sound manipulation tool I've been working on during the past few weeks, which consists of a series of rotating speakers that produce the Doppler effect when they are set in motion.

The disc on display had two modes: One frequency mode, where you could set a frequency by adjusting the potentiometer knobs, and one mode where the public could plug in a mobile phone and listen to the frequencies of their own music being shifted as the disc spun around. 






Sonifying Noise Pollution

A data visualisation project I've been working on, using Max MSP to sonify noise pollution data from road traffic sources, with data obtained from the European Environmental Agency.

Road traffic is one of the main sources of noise pollution in cities, and its impacts on human health are well documented. With this project, I wanted to highlight the extent of noise pollution from road traffic sources in the UK.

The data contained information on the percentages of people in UK cities who were exposed to dangerous levels of noise pollution (>65 dB) on a day-to-day basis. The data was then refined and the cities were colour-coded according to their noise pollution level. The colour channels were then each assigned a particular frequency and users could click on the map to hear the different levels of noise pollution in each city.





RCA Christmas Fête 2016

I exhibited for the 2nd year in a row at the Royal College of Art Christmas Fête this December with my friends and classmates Yanqi Liang and Simji Park!

We had a range of products on display, including posters, notebooks, Christmas cards and Yanqi's ceramic sculptures:










Etiuda & Anima 2016

My animated short "Flowers and Feathers" will be screened this week as part of the ANIMA programme in the Etiuda&Anima festival in Krakow, Poland, along with some other great shorts by Paul Bush, Bill Plympton and many more.


The Plastic Island



The Plastic Island represents the ratio of plastics polluting the ocean surface versus plastics found in the deep sea, including microfibres in deep sea sediments.

This work was completed during a 1-week workshop, 'Data Provocation', run by Karin Von Ompteda as part of AcrossRCA, and in collaboration with Design Products student Yilan Lu.





Nigerian Pavilion – "No Flares Just Light"

Short project in August producing a "utopian" map of Nigeria for the Nigerian Pavilion at the first London Design Biennale showcased at Somerset House. 

I constructed a high-res map of Nigeria using image data from Google Earth showing both a current view of Nigeria's Port Harcourt area and the surrounding gas flares (using data from gasflaretracker.ng) and a "utopian" version, where the energy from the gas flares would be used to light up roads and towns around the country.

Collaboration with Shobhan Shah who added the map imagery to Processing to have the flares gradually disappearing as the cities begin to light up and an interface on the screen for Twitter messages to pop up whenever a tweet was sent with the hash tag #noflaresjustlight. Two Raspberry Pi's were used to show the maps on two separate 50 inch screens in 4K resolution, each screen focusing on either the current or the "utopian" view of Nigeria.
